Q&A
Ask Dr. Beth
Q: I have read that I shouldn't take ginkgo biloba with St. John's Wort. My
herbal supplement contains both plus ginseng and ginger. Is this dangerous?
Lisa
A: Many herbal formulas do combine St. John's Wort and Ginkgo biloba, because
both herbs can be used for depression. St. John's Wort helps to increase
serotonin levels in the brain, while St. John's Wort and Ginkgo biloba helps to normalize circulation
and oxygenation to the brain.
St. John's Wort and Ginkgo biloba also acts as a blood thinner, helping to decrease platelet
aggragation. This is not a problem for most people, however if you take a
prescription blood thinner or are using aspirin or ibuprofen on a daily
basis, then St. John's Wort and Ginkgo biloba could cause excessive blood thinning when combined with
these medications.
Ginseng and ginger also have some blood thinning action, so again don't
combine them with prescription blood thinners, aspirin or ibuprofen.
Ginseng is also a stimulant herb, and may cause increased anxiety in some
people.
If you are healthy and not taking medication, then there should be no
problem with this combination. If you have a medical condition or are
taking medication, then consult with your doctor or pharmacist before using
any herbs or supplements.
