Herbs that can be used as muscle relaxants.

Question on Muscle Relaxants

Can you recommend any herbal or natural muscle relaxants?

There are a number of herbs that can be used as muscle relaxants including valerian, hops, passion flower, kava kava and black cohosh. Try a single herb or a combination of several of these and follow the recommended dose on the package. Since valerian, hops, passion flower and kava kava are all sedatives, remember that they may cause drowsiness and should not be used if you are driving or operating heavy machinery. These herbs should not be used along with prescription muscle relaxants or sedatives since the combination can result in oversedation. If inflammation is part of your muscle pain, you may also want to consider using an antiinflammatory herb like ginger, curcumin or boswellia.

Since the minerals calcium and magnesium are important for proper muscle contraction, you will want to make sure that you are getting adequate levels of these in your diet or take a supplement. The dietary reference intake for calcium is 1000-1300 mg per day and for magnesium 320-420 mg per day. If you use a supplement try calcium citrate and magnesium malate for best absorption.
