Dr. Beth BurchCould coughing up blood mean cancer?Q. Could coughing up blood mean something else beside cancer?A. The most common cause of coughing up blood, also known as hemoptysis, is acute or chronic
bronchitis (50% of cases), much less common are tuberculosis (10-20%) and tumors (20%).
Other more rare causes include various heart problems and bleeding disorders. Bleeding from
the nose, mouth or throat areas that drains into the trachea can occur.
It is very important that you see your doctor to evaluate the cause. Amounts of blood
more than streaks can indicate serious bleeding and should be evaluated immediately. A
physical exam and a chest xray will identify most of the causes of hemoptysis. Treatment is
directed at stopping the bleeding if necessary and correcting the underlying condition. For more on Hemoptysis
