Dr. Beth BurchDandelion (Taraxacum off.) best herbal diuretic with demonstrated activity.Q. Can you recommend an herbal diuretic? I'm taking Lasix 40mg and trying to
find an herbal alternative with my doctor's consent.A. The best herbal diuretic with demonstrated activity is Dandelion (Taraxacum off.).
There are some reports that it is as effective as Lasix, but I am not aware of any studies
comparing the two. Since it is a food (dandelion leaves are used as salad greens) it is
very safe and also nutritious. Unlike many diuretics which deplete potassium in the body,
Dandelion is high in potassium. I would suggest a preparation made from Dandelion leaf or a
combination of leaf and root. The dosage is 1000-2000 mg three times a day. Dry herb in
capsules would be best. You can also include Dandelion leaf in your diet, it is available
in some grocery sections or you can harvest your own. Just be sure that what you harvest
has not been treated with weed killer. Other foods with diuretic action include watermelon,
parsley, asparagus and celery.
It is great that your doctor is willing to work with you in using alternative therapies.
Be sure that he/she is aware of what you are using and is monitoring your response. For more on Diuretics
