Dr. Beth BurchFlu shot excellent idea for anyone at risk.Q. What is your opinion of the flu shot?A. I think that the flu shot is an excellent idea for anyone who is at risk from serious
complications from the flu. That would include the elderly and those with serious health
problems, especially immune system problems and heart and lung diseases. People who work in
areas where they may be exposed to a lot of cases of the flu may also want to consider a flu
shot, including health care workers and teachers.
It is important to remember that the flu shot only protects against three strains of
influenza virus. These three strains are selected each year in the spring to make the flu
shot for the next fall and winter. It is somewhat of a guessing game, albeit an educated
guess, but does not guarantee that it will protect you completely if the flu viruses mutate
from the strains used in the vaccine. Also there are many other flu-like viral illnesses
that occur in the winter months and the flu shot does not protect against those.
Talk with your health care provider to determine if getting the flu shot is a good idea
for you. Then, whether or not you get the shot, be sure to use these basic guidelines to
help minimize your chances of getting the flu and other viruses.
1. Avoid being around ill people.
2. Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with your
hands.
3. Don't share eating utensils, drinking cups and glasses and towels and washcloths with
others.
4. Get plenty of rest.
5. Eat a well balanced diet and drink plenty of water.
6. Use a good vitamin mineral supplement.
7. Humidify inside air.
8. If you do get sick, stay home and rest. For more on Vaccination
