Dr. Beth BurchSports drinks to replace electrolytes.Q. My 13-year-old son plays football. The coaches told us NOT to give them
Gatorade to drink because it has too much sugar and salt. Is this true? I was
always told Gatorade is a good way of replacing the electrolytes they lose due
during activities.A. Profuse sweating from strenuous activity, particularly in high temperatures, can cause
rapid loss of large amounts of fluid and electrolytes, especially sodium and chloride
(salt). If only water is replaced, problems like heat cramps and/or water intoxication can
result. To prevent these serious problems, athletes and laborers should consume both water
and electrolytes frequently during strenuous activity.
Gatorade is rather concentrated and sweet. It also contains artificial colors and
flavors that are unnecessary and may cause health problems in some people. I recommend one
of the more natural sports drinks that have mineral salts and less sugar and no artificial
ingredients.
Since your son's coaches have recommended against the Gatorade, you may want to ask their
opinion regarding the best way to replace both water and electrolytes during football
practice and games. For more on Electrolytes
