Dr. Beth BurchSublingual allergy desensitization alternative to injections.Q. What's your opinion of sublingual allergen drops? Not many clinics offer
this type of treatment. We have a young child with many allergies and Ig-a
deficiency. We're trying to find relief without the trauma of weekly
shots.A. Sublingual allergy desensitization is a good alternative to injections. Look for an
allergy specialist experienced in this therapy. Desensitization is part of an treatment
program for highly allergic individuals. Decreasing allergen exposure and immune system
support should accompany it.
Appropriate allergy testing should be done to identify both environmental and food
allergens. Exposure to environmental allergens can be decreased in a number of ways
including the use of air filtration, hypoallergenic bedding, removal of carpets and rugs,
attention to removal of dust, mold and mildew from surfaces, and removing pets from the
house. Based on the allergies are present, the allergy specialist can advise you which of
these are necessary, and whether additional measures are needed. Food allergies can be
managed with food elimination and/or rotation, again based on the particular allergies.
Various nutritional supplements are helpful in allergies including antioxidants like
carotenes, vitamins C and E and flavonoids, magnesium and B vitamins, and essential fatty
acids. The allergy specialist can advise you on which supplements and what dosages to use.
Supporting the immune system is always important in allergy treatment, but will be
especially important since your child has an immune system deficiency. Again, seek
professional advice for specific recommendations.
To find an allergy specialist to help you in these areas, look for a physician called a
clinical ecologist. The American College for the Advancement of Medicine, www.acam.org can
help with a referral or check the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians,
www.naturopathic.org. For more on Allergies
