Dr. Beth BurchUsing any herb longer than a week not recommend in a young child.Q. I have been giving my daughter catnip since she was an infant. My mother
started to give it to her every day, and has been doing so for the past
year. Is this harmful? What are the long-term effects?A. You don't say why you are giving your daughter catnip or how much she takes each day.
Since you have been treating her for a year, a visit to her doctor to evaluate the condition
you are treating is a good idea. In general, I would not recommend using any herb for
longer than a week in a young child without some professional guidance. Most simple
conditions in which one might use catnip in an infant or toddler should only need a small
dose for a short time.
Catnip is a central nervous system depressant. While it is generally safe in recommended
doses, it can cause excessive sedation in young children. Long term effects in animal
studies included excessive sleepiness, increased sleep time and an increased susceptibility
to seizures. Consult with your health care provider before continuing to give her the
catnip.
