Dr. Beth BurchChronic fatigue syndrome requires comprehensive approach.Q. Two years ago, I was told by my doctor that I had chronic fatigue syndrome.
I've also been taking an antidepressant for the last seven years. My problem
is that I don't have any energy at the end of the day to satisfy my husband's
sexual needs. Is there anything I could take to get some energy?A. Decreased energy and fatigue are the hallmark of chronic fatigue syndrome. Treatment of
CFS requires a comprehensive approach. It is very important that you and your doctor
identify underlying factors which can be contributing to decreased energy levels. Stress,
impaired detoxification, impaired immune function, low thyroid function, hypoglycemia, food
allergies, low adrenal function and chronic infections can all be contributing factors to
fatigue and low energy. Identification and treatment of these conditions will assist with
increasing energy. In addition, good diet, supplementation of vitamins and minerals,
exercise and stress management will help to promote normal energy levels.
Another consideration is that many antidepressants can depress sexual desire and cause
fatigue. Ask your doctor if your medication could be contributing to your lack of energy
and desire for sex.
Finally, talk with your husband about how you both can better meet your sexual needs.
For many of us with busy lives who donÝt have chronic fatigue syndrome, it is often
difficult to have the energy at the end of a long day for sex. Finding a time of day when
you have more energy or on weekends or days off can be a better choice than waiting until
you are exhausted. Having your husband give you a massage can be beneficial for relaxation
and a nice way to initiate intimacy. Sex can be helpful to increase immune function and
energy, so look for ways to include sex in your life. For more on Chronic Fatigue
