Eating disorders are complex.

Q.

My friend has an eating disorder, and she finally realized that something is not right. She is 64 inches and weighs 93 pounds. I want to help her, but I don't know how. I know she doesn't want to go to therapy. How can I help her? I'm really concerned, but I'm also proud of her that she finally realized it.

A.

It is good that your friend recognizes that she has a problem. That's the first step towards solving it. Eating disorders are very complex- there are usually psychological issues and sometimes metabolic problems as well. Complications include early osteoporosis from low estrogen levels, as well as malnutrition and electrolyte imbalance. Studies have indicated mortality rates of up to 20% of people with severe anorexia.

I would recommend that she consult with a physician who specializes in eating disorders. It is important to have both medical management of physical problems as well as excellent psychotherapy to deal with the psychological issues that are associated with this.

Encourage your friend to seek professional help. She can start with her family physician or gynecologist.
