Dr. Beth BurchHerpes outbreaksQ. My husband and I both have herpes. But I may see an outbreak only twice a
year, and he gets it sometimes two or three times a month. I have asked
him to go to the doctor, and he will not go. He thinks acyclovir will
cause bad side effects. He has had this for 17 years now, and he really
needs to find a solution. We both tested negative for HIV.A. Herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus. This virus causes cold sores and genital
herpes sores. After an initial infection the virus lies dormant in nerve cells where it
can be reactivated and cause recurring outbreaks. Reactivation can be triggered by other
infections, trauma, emotional, dietary or environmental stress and sun exposure. Enhancing
immune function helps to prevent and control herpes outbreaks.
Immune function is enhanced by good diet, optimal intake of vitamins and minerals, plenty
of rest and stress management. Dietary manipulation of the ratio of two amino acids,
arginine and lysine, helps to inhibit herpes virus replication. Avoid high arginine foods
like chocolate, nuts, and seeds. Include plenty of high lysine foods like vegetables, fish
and poultry. Many people with recurrent herpes find a lysine supplement helpful- 500 mg
three times a day is a good dose.
Besides a good multiple vitamin mineral supplement, extra vitamin C, bioflavonoids and
zinc are a good idea. Try 500 mg of vitamin C and bioflavonoids four times a day and a
total dose of 30 mg of zinc daily. The best topical application for herpes lesions appears
to be a lemon balm extract in cream form, one brand name is Herpelyn. Studies with lemon
balm extract cream have shown that its regular use (twice a day) results in a significant
reduction in the frequency of recurrences and more rapid healing of lesions when they occur.
Your husband should be sure to get plenty of rest and include some stress management
strategies daily.
Herpes lesions are very contagious. One can even spread their own lesions to unaffected
areas. So be sure to use good hand washing and other good hygeine measures to prevent new
lesions.
Acyclovir can help to prevent recurrence and decrease duration of herpes outbreaks. It
does have some side effects including malaise, headaches, lethargy and nausea and vomiting,
so it is worth trying the natural approach first. For more on Herpes
